Marathon County’s State-of-the-Art Medical Examiner Facility Sets New Standards for Forensic Sciences Education

Marathon County’s primary objective was to establish a regional medical examiner building that could efficiently serve the entire area, eliminating the need to obtain medical examiner services at nearby regional facilities such as Minneapolis, MN or Madison, WI. This overarching goal emphasized the critical importance of creating a local state-of-the-art facility capable of meeting the highest standards in forensic science. The facility will live adjacent to Northcentral Technical College, which also presents a unique opportunity to create a space that not only serves its primary purpose but also acts as an educational resource for students interested in a career in forensic sciences.

The new facility design features three medical exam tables distributed across two rooms, an additional x-ray room, intake areas, an observation room, a sally port, and office space for a team of 16 staff members. Unique to forensic science, the area demanded a meticulous approach to sanitary finishes and an intuitive workflow.

In close collaboration with McLaren, Wilson Lawrie—the nation’s premiere medical examiner designer—careful planning went into creating a layout that reduced the manual lifting of decedents, demonstrating a commitment to both efficiency and dignity. Building tours, incorporating insights from the current medical examiner spaces and workflows, provided essential context for the design process.

A Tissue Donation suite was developed to give families additional options outside of organ donations to contribute to medical advancements. Medical autopsies give families an opportunity to learn more about a loved one’s medical history and tissue donations aid in the understanding of disease prevention. The facility will be situated on a narrow site at Northcentral Technical College, which posed a significant design challenge. Venture designed a long and narrow building in response to maximize the available space without compromising on the logical workflow and serviceability of the facility. The wooded site contains a creek, which inspired design elements that contribute to the well-being of the staff. These elements were strategically placed to offer moments of respite, allowing for staff decompression and healing within the natural surroundings. A Comfort Room was created to provide a place of peace for investigators, pathologists, and authorities to meet with grieving families. An outdoor Grief Garden lives adjacent to this room as an additional sanctuary space. A comprehensive security plan was developed to segregate public, staff, and forensics activities, ensuring a controlled and secure environment. The result is a cutting-edge design that not only meets the functional needs of the medical examiner’s office but also considers the well-being and efficiency of the staff. The new Center is meant to be an educational pillar in the worlds of forensic pathology, funeral science, and emergency medical services with the goal of growing and retaining a local workforce in these fields. Not only will the Center be hands-on in teaching the skills for these jobs to local students, but they will also connect those students to local employers.
